The Management Unit of the Comarca Minera Geopark continues to drive initiatives for the conservation, popularization, and enhancement of geological, natural, and cultural heritage. As part of this effort, the Geopark’s new offices were unveiled this morning, informative panels were delivered to various geosites, and new Proud Partners were officially recognized.
The Geopark Management Unit—alongside Roberto Moncayo Morales, Eng., President of the Basaltic Prisms Tourist Association and administrator of the Basaltic Prisms Geosite, and Herminia Moncayo Morales, the comisariada of Santa María Regla—welcomed Dr. José Luis Macías Vázquez, Director of the UNAM Institute of Geophysics; ejidatarios in charge of the San Miguel Regla-Bosque de las Truchas and Peña del Aire geosites; Geopark Guardians; the new Proud Partners; and Rodrigo Fragoso, Director of Tourism for Huasca de Ocampo.
The event began with the talk “Basaltic Prisms around the World,” presented by Dr. John Jairo Sánchez Aguilar from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Following the lecture, Roberto Moncayo Morales, Eng. officially handed over the new Comarca Minera Geopark offices. Located at the Basaltic Prisms Geosite Interpretation Center, these facilities will strengthen visitor services as well as geoeducation, research, and community outreach activities.
During the ceremony, María del Carmen Oviedo Parra, MSc, and Dr. Juan Carlos Mora Chaparro presented the new informative panels that continue to be installed across the geosites. On this occasion, panels were delivered to the San Miguel Regla-Bosque de las Truchas Geosite and the Peña del Aire Geosite, represented by Esmeralda Montaño Ruiz and Juan Alvarado Jarillo.
Furthermore, due to their efforts in popularizing geological heritage and safeguarding intangible cultural heritage by sharing local legends—which strengthen identity, collective memory, and cultural legacy—several nighttime tourist tours in Huasca de Ocampo were recognized as new Proud Partners of the Geopark: Noche de Leyendas Huasca, El Espíritu del Bosque, and Lunada Mágica, along with geoguides José Manuel Meneses Zozaya and Ricardo Juárez Aguilar.
Finally, certificates of participation were awarded to the tour guides who completed the course “Introduction to Basaltic Prisms and Their Importance for Communities,” reaffirming the Geopark’s commitment to training, scientific dissemination, and geological heritage conservation.
We live in a Geopark, a territory exceptional for its geological, natural, and cultural wealth. Each of us who inhabits it contributes to caring for, preserving, and valuing this heritage, strengthening local identity and the pride of belonging. Thank you for joining the values of UNESCO Geoparks.
