We Live in a Geopark: Traquita El Guajolote Geosite

During our visit to the Traquita El Guajolote Geosite in Epazoyucan, María del Carmen Oviedo Parra, MSc, General Manager of the UNESCO Global Geopark Comarca Minera, shared the talk “We Live in a Geopark” with the community of the San Pedro ejido.

It was a gathering for reflection on the geological, natural, and cultural heritage surrounding the Geosite, emphasizing the importance of understanding, valuing, conserving, and enjoying it in a sustainable manner.

At the end of the session, we witnessed a rehearsal of the “Danza del Arcoíris” (Rainbow Dance), a traditional dance rich in meaning and symbolism. The performers are residents of the San Pedro ejido community, which is preparing for its patronal festival on June 29.

We also observed the preparation of dishes made with wild mushrooms, prepared by traditional local cooks to share with the attendees.

The ejido’s commitment to sustainable practices in the park’s traditional cuisine was highlighted, reflecting their respect for the environment and local traditions.

An experience that demonstrates how geology, nature, and culture intertwine in geoparques to build a more sustainable future.
