GEOSITE DESCRIPTION

The geosite is located in the central-western part of the Comarca Minera, within Del Chico National Park. It is characterized by rocks up to 40 meters high in the form of pinnacles. It is found at an altitude of 3090 meters above sea level, making it the highest elevation point in the National Park. The rocks exposed in Las Ventanas belong to the Zumate Formation, whose lithology is made up of volcanic rocks that vary in composition from rhyolites and andesites, mainly.

GEOLOGICAL ELEMENTS

he site exhibits an effusive volcanic event with the formation of volcanic domes in the Pliocene, with rocks of andesitic and rhyolitic composition; in this geosite the contrast between a coniferous landscape and the presence of rural and urban populations can be appreciated, which have given rise to a very important cultural heritage for the inhabitants of this site, and have made it possible for the beauty of these peculiar forms to coexist with their populations within El Chico National Park.

BIOTA

Fir, pine and oak forests, while among the fauna it is possible to spot gray foxes, cacomixtles, tlacuaches, armadillos, hawks, eagles, woodpeckers, salamanders, mountain chameleons and rattlesnakes.
