Ex-Convento de San Andrés Apóstol
GEOSITE DESCRIPTION
- It was built by Augustinian Friars
The Former Convent of San Andrés Apóstol, built from 1540 by the Augustinian Friars, displays a Plateresque style that fuses Renaissance, Gothic and Classical elements, but also highlights indigenous workmanship. Distinctive features include paired columns next to the door and rich ornamentation. In addition to its architecture, the convent is surrounded by hydraulic engineering works, evidenced by the presence of two fountains, one in the courtyard and the other in front of the church. As for the mural painting, it was used for both decorative and didactic purposes, highlighting representations of the life and death of Christ. The technique used was false fresco, with a predominance of dark and gray tones, occasionally with polychrome. Considered an example of cultural syncretism, the convent has a museum managed by the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

It preserves extraordinary polychrome murals, combining different Romanesque, Mudejar and Plateresque styles on its walls, as well as numerous indigenous contributions such as the carving of the choir loft, where the use of obsidian tools can be appreciated.
