Mineral del Monte
1837
The English Cemetery or British Graveyard was established in the first half of the 19th century in a land donated by an official of the local mining companies in response to the need to bury or remember the miners who mainly died in accidents. Because of their religion many of them were not accepted in the cemeteries managed by the Catholic Church. It is probably one of the first cemeteries that were not managed by the Church. The space has 755 tombs built with masonry, quarry and marble. In addition to housing the remains of people of English origin, there are also buried here individuals of various nationalities such as Scottish, Irish, German, Dutch and Chinese, as well as Masonic, Jewish, Anglican, Methodist and some Catholic individuals.
Since 2011, this place also keeps the remains of Inocencio Hernandez Lara, known as Don Chencho, who dedicated 47 years of his life not only to the care of the cemetery, but also to preserve the stories and the mining environment that characterize Mineral del Monte
