Atotonilco El Grande y Huasca de Ocampo
Decree issued in 2000
A portion of the natural protected area overlaps with the PGCM territory, located between the municipalities of Atotonilco El Grande and Huasca de Ocampo.
Because of its orographic, topographic, and physiographic characteristics, the Metztitlán Ravine possesses an astonishing scenic beauty. Here, one can observe the geological diversity, with volcanic rocks at the top and sedimentary rocks at the base, which marks the intersection of the two geological and physiographic provinces in the Comarca Minera: The Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountain Range
This place is seen as a Pleistocene sanctuary for Mexican desert biota and is home to a variety of delicate arid zone ecosystems, rich in flora and fauna of biological, scientific, economic, social and cultural relevance.
The Barranca de Metztitlán Biosphere Reserve is so large that it ranges from cloud forests in the mountains, through semi-arid zones with abundant cacti such as biznagas and organs, to areas of lowland rainforest. The Barranca de Metztitlán is one of the most important cactological zones in the country.
From Pachuca take the Corredor de la Montaña highway towards Atotonilco El Grande and Huasca de Ocampo.
